More “Date your Mate” ideas on a Budget!!

Updated: Oct 20, 2021

I had some requests for some more date night ideas (with the focus mainly being on frugal stay @ home ideas)

So here’s a few more ideas I have come up with…

Maybe all of these aren’t you and your spouse‘s personal “cup of tea” and if not, that’s ok. But I encourage you to challenge yourself to try a few of these —even if they are “out of your normal comfort zone”… you may be surprised at how much fun you and your spouse might end up having!!

1. Cook a meal together… Or perhaps, do a fun cook off challenge against each other… for instance, each of you go into the grocery store separately (or shop your own pantry if possible to save money) and purchase/pick a few random items for the other spouse, then once arriving home, you both have to come up with some way to make an (at least edible! lol 😂) recipe using just the ingredients chosen for you by your partner. This can be so hilarious!! (You can also chose to allow the use of base ingredients like salt, butter, milk, etc… this is so fun and highly customizeable — and the rules are totally up to you!!) ……………………………………………….

2. Paint portraits of each other using cheap canvases from dollar tree — Just remember though … don’t take Stuff personal… lol… unless your spouse is really a “closet” artist, it’s highly unlikely that their “masterpiece” will even resemble you in the slightest!! 😂 But it can be a fun, easy way to have a lot of laughs and to enjoy each other’s company while “doing an actual activity”

3. Solve a mystery together — for those of you that love mysteries and sleuthing… I have heard this game is fun but I haven’t bought it yet myself. https://amzn.to/3lUOLJi

4. Go star gazing on a clear starry night— if you have a truck, throw some old blankets/pillows in the back and drive outside the city to where there is less artificial light and the stars are more prominent. Try to pick out some of the constellations or just enjoy the starry view while you both just relax, talk, and reconnect . And along those same lines…

5. Go for a scenic drive —we have personally done this one so many times… My husband loves “to take in new territories” as he calls it. While the change in scenery is nice, I have found we have had amazing conversations while just “out for a drive.” (I suppose that’s where the phrase “going for a Sunday drive” came from… other couples thought it was wonderful way to reconnect as well!!)

6. Go out for a picnic— this is another one of our personal favorites— this date is extremely frugal, yet so much fun!! Pack a lunch, go to a lake, a local park, or nature preserve… and just enjoy each other’s company surrounded by the beauty of nature!!

7. (While out and about, ) Take some cute selfies together— this one has always been a tough one for us! lol 😂 my husband doesn’t like taking photos, but sometimes, he can be coerced lol 😂!! Taking a few photos together while spending time “building your relationship“ makes fun digital mementos to enjoy in the future!! ( see #10 )

8. Play some games!! — Date night games at home don’t have to be complicated. Pull out your favorite 2-player card games or board games for some fun together. ( Or download a two player digital game on your phone or tablet— if you have an iPhone— Gamepigeon is a fun one!! or download the same game on both your phones and compete against each other for the highest score!)

9. TACKLE A PROJECT TOGETHER!! Build something, hang some photos, paint a room or organize your closet together. Be sure to remember to keep it fun by being silly with your spouse!! (and try to sneak in some hugs/kisses to make it extra special!! 🥰).

10. Take a Trip Down Memory Lane! Be honest: How often do you actually look through your camera roll or even better, pull out old flash drives or photo albums? if you are like me, I love capturing life’s special moments in photo and thus, I have tons of pictures!! To keep the clutter down, I usually only print a few absolute favorites but years later, it can be so fun to pull out my old digital files and browse through all those memories! Bill and I have done this many times!! Such a fun and easy idea to reconnect, laugh, and refresh our memories of wonderful past experiences!!

Well, that was just a few ideas … let me know if you would like to see more …

Hopefully, these ideas can be a springboard and will inspire you to get creative in your own relationship with your spouse!! It isn’t really always about WHAT you are doing, but rather, just having fun and spending that quality one-on-one time with your mate! Our marriages need that intentional quality bonding time to reconnect — So I challenge you to make it a priority in your home!!

-Tiphanie ❤️
