So, what is God’s design for marriage and what is His purpose ?
There is something so special about the relationship between a husband and wife. God himself created the bond of marriage way back at the beginning in the Garden of Eden. He saw it wasn’t good for Adam to be alone. So, He created a “woman” to be a helpmeet for Adam.
By this, we can see that one of God’s first designs for marriage is to provide companionship for the man—an intimate, close relationship with his mate. He didn’t want Adam to suffer loneliness. He knew he needed a close confidant and friend to share his life with. He knew that mankind needed companionship to be fulfilled. When God created Eve, He made her the perfect fit, companion, and helpmeet for Adam. Marriage was created by God to unite a man and woman for life. Marriage was meant to be a covenant between two people: a solemn, binding agreement. In a marriage covenant, a man and woman promise to devote themselves to only each other, and they pledge to be faithful and loyal to one another.
Like I mentioned before in the posts on Christ and the Church, Marriage and the Home, God designed marriage to be an living example to reflect His own love and devotion toward man. He wanted us to have a picture of the relationship between Christ and the church.
God also wants to use marriage as a tool to make us into better people !!
He wants to teach us to serve each other. We are commanded “to be subject one to another”. By being committed and serving the needs of your spouse, God is actually working on you!! God wanted us to emulate Christ‘s example ( remember at the Last Supper? Jesus humbled himself and served the disciples. He washed their feet!! He wanted us have that example of humility and servitude as a reference point. When you serve your spouse with a willing and humble heart, You are becoming more like Christ!! Another one of God’s purposes for marriage is for “procreation”. He wanted people to bring forth children—each one with the ability to worship and bring glory to Him if they so choose. He wanted multitudes of worshippers! The Bible tells us — children are a heritage of the Lord!! God desired married people to bring forth children that they are instructed to train in the ways of God!!
Genesis 9:7 —And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.
God also designed marriage to enable us bring Glory to God together. Two are better than one!! Having a partnership even in the spiritual aspect greatly increases your ability to overcome and be victorious over the struggles of life !!
God also intended for a Godly marriage to be used a teaching example of what marriage is suppose to look like to your children and to all those that come in contact with you! Bring God Glory!!
Lastly, while it isn’t the only primary goal, God did want marriage to provide us much happiness, love, pleasure, friendship, and quality of life all the days of our lives. He wanted us to enjoy our marriages, especially serving Him by serving each other!!
