Frugal “Special Treat” idea

I don’t know about your kids but as my kids get bigger, they are becoming more expensive. 😂 When we go out to get ice cream as a special treat occasionally, we have discovered it is becoming more and more costly. They aren’t content with the little complimentary kid’s cones any more. Oh no! Lol 😂 They want Mcflurries or Blizzards.

For 4 small Mcflurries @ Mcdonalds in our area the total is around $14.37.

For 4 small Blizzards @ Dairy Queen in our area, the total is about $19.03.

Needless to say, that has made our “treat” occasions far and few between.

One day, my husband wanted to go get a Blizzard. Then he was like, “why can’t you make it at home?” I was like, “I probably could, I guess.” So instead of running to DQ or McDonald’s, we went to the grocery store instead.

I bought :

a package of cookies —$3.99

1 gallon tub of vanilla ice cream—$4.99

Total: $8.98

I went home and begin to experiment —my blender isn’t much count so I decided to use my stand mixer. I crumbled the cookies up into big chunks and put them in the mixing bowl first. I mixed them up very slowly first to avoid cookie crumbs being slung all over my kitchen. (a food processor also works well for this)

Once the cookies were crunched up finely enough, I added scoops of (softened) vanilla ice cream and turned up the mixer speed slightly.

It worked like a charm!!

Within just a few minutes (and with minimal effort really), I made blizzards/McFlurries for my entire family… All for $8.98 total (and they were closer to large size and also had extra cookie crumbs which would have cost extra if we had ordered extra toppings at a restaurant) and really, the $8.98 for 4 large blizzards figure isn’t even accurate…I made blizzards 2-3 times out of that tub of ice cream and package of cookies. So if you take $8.98 and divide it by 8 blizzards alone ( it was probably closer to 10 really), that works out to about $ 1.12 per LARGE blizzard (with extra mix-ins) definitely a win-win in my book!! Saving money while still enjoying a special treat !!

I have tried using other cookie flavors and mix-ins with good success!! Be creative!

Make your family smile tonight!! Make them a “special treat” and save some hard earned cash!!
